CIC General Insurance Limited was incorporated on 29th July 2009 as a wholly owned subsidiary of CIC Insurance Group Plc in compliance with Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) directive of separating business of life and general. It was duly registered on 27th November 2012.

Mr. Alfred Nkhono is currently the Board Chairperson of CIC Africa Cooperatives Insurance Limited. He was appointed Director of CIC Africa Cooperatives Insurance Limited Cooperatives Life Insurance Limited and in January 2015. He was Chairperson of the Audit Committee of CIC Africa Co-operatives Insurance Limited Group between 2015 and 2022. Mr. Nkhono is currently the Acting Group Chief Executive of AHL Group Plc.

He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (FCMA); a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA); a Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA); and is also a Certified Accountant in Malawi (CA). He also holds a Bachelor of Commerce (B Com) Degree in Accountancy from University of Malawi. He has over 28 years post-qualification experience. Prior to joining AHL Group Plc, Mr. Nkhono also served as Chief Executive Officer for Press Agriculture Ltd for 9 years. He had also worked for Press Corporation Plc, Malawi Rural Finance Company Limited and National Lotteries Board. In addition to his vast accounting experience (both internal & external), Mr Nkhono is also a seasoned Company Secretary.

In terms of other Board roles, Mr Nkhono is also Chairman of AHL Chemicals & Steel Limited and Carnac Limited and is a Director on the Boards of Agriculture Trading Company Limited (ATC), Malawi Leaf Company Limited and IC-TECH Africa Limited. He also previous served as a Director of Farmers Union of Malawi, Director of FUM Holdings Limited, Chairperson of the Policy and Advocacy Committee of Farmers Union of Malawi (FUM) and Director and Vice Chairman, Commercial Agriculture Support Services (CASS).

Jacob Nyirongo

Jacob Christopher Nyirongo is the Chief Executive Officer for Farmers Union of Malawi. He graduated with a Master of Science Degree in Agronomy in 1999 from Bunda College of Agriculture, a Constituent College of the University of Malawi. He has experience in policy advocacy and engagement, organizational strategy development and implementation, leadership and organizational change management among others. He chairs the Advisory Board for MwaPATA Institute and is a member in the Boards of Greenbelt Authority, Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Authority (PPDA), Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI), Chitukuko SACCO, CIC-Africa Cooperatives Insurance Limited and Centre for Agriculture Transformation. He is also a member of Steering Committees of various Malawi Government Agriculture Development Projects providing policy oversight. He has vast experience working on projects related to agriculture value chains development, development of farmer organizations, access to markets and agriculture policy and regulatory reforms. He has worked on projects funded by USAID, World Bank, DFID, Royal Norwegian Embassy, Irish Aid, and We Effect. He has worked for a number of organizations including International Crops Research in Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), GIZ, International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF), Christian Aid, Norwegian Church Aid, and Oxfam.

Mr. Fumbani Nyangulu

Mr Fumbani Nyangulu is currently the Chief Executive Officer Malawi Union of Savings and Credit Cooperatives Limited (MUSCCO). He holds a Bachelor of Accountancy degree and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree obtained from University of Malawi- The Polytechnic. He is a seasoned Finance specialist.

For the past 24 years, he has been responsible for the Financial services and Business Development Functions in the Malawi Union of Savings and Credit Cooperatives (MUSCCO) as well as Savings and Credit Cooperatives (SACCO) Development which involved providing consultancy and training services to Savings and Credit Cooperatives (SACCOs) in the areas of Strategic Financial Management, Accounting, Governance, Audit, Products Development, Credit Management and Information Risk Management. He is currently Chief Executive of MUSCCO and is a full International Cooperative Development Educator (ICUDE). Before joining MUSCCO in 1997, Mr Nyangulu worked as an Assistant Accountant of Wood Industries Corporation Ltd for one year.

1. A Technical Board Member of African Confederation of Cooperative Savings and Credit Association (ACCOSCA) headquartered in Kenya;

2. CIC Cooperatives General Insurance as a Board member and is also a member of Finance, Administration and Governance Committee;

3. CIC Cooperatives Life Insurance Board member and is also a member of Finance, Administration and Governance Committee;

4. Malawi Investment and Trade Center (MITC) as a Board member and is also a Chairperson of the Finance and Administration Committee;

5. Micro Finance Hub Company as a Board member as well as a member of the Finance and Administration Committee

6. Farmers Union of Malawi (FUM) Holdings Ltd as a Board member.

Robert Mbeza

Robert Mbeza is a Master of Business Administration (MBA) Graduate with a Major in Finance, has BBA in Applied Business both from Davenport University, Michigan USA and a Diploma in Agriculture from the University of Malawi.

Robert has extensive experience in cooperative development especially in Financial Cooperatives and other types of Cooperatives having been involved with cooperatives for 40 years. Robert has been a board chairperson of 4 Savings and Credit Cooperatives (SACCOs) and a Housing Cooperative. He has worked with Financial Cooperatives in Malawi, Kenya, South Africa and USA and he is currently Managing Director of the first Housing Cooperative in Malawi called Housing Investment and Development Cooperative (HIDCO).

As a consultant, among other assignments, he reviewed the National Cooperative Development Policy of Malawi under the Ministry of Industry, Determined Access to Finance Facility for Ministry of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development and Financial Institutions to use in providing access to credit to the youth and explored appropriate financial products that suit the needs of young entrepreneurs and Cooperatives and Farmer Organisations Sector Mapping funded by GIZ Malawi. Robert has assisted a number of cooperatives, including the Malawi Federation of Cooperatives to develop their strategic plans.

Currently, Robert is the Founding Member and Managing Director of Housing Investment and Development Cooperative (HIDCO). He is also assisting groups of people to register their cooperatives. In the past year he has assisted two groups to register their cooperatives and the third one is in the process of registration.

Independent Non- Executive Director

Dr. Nelson Kuria MBS, OGW, F.IoDK

Dr. Nelson Kuria holds a B.A in Economics and M.A in Leadership. He has worked for over 36 years’ experience in the Financial Services sector, and retired after serving for 14 years as Group MD/CEO of CIC insurance Group and is credited with transforming the CIC Insurance Group from a very small co-operative insurer to the third biggest insurance group in Kenya by the time he retired in February 2015.

He has served as Chairman of the Association of Kenya Insurers, Deputy Chairman of Federation of Kenya Employers, Co-operative University and board member of many organizations, notably; Kenya Reinsurance Corporation, Takaful Insurance of Africa, Kenyatta National Hospital, College of Insurance and the International Co-operative & Mutual Insurance Federation. He has served as a member of three UN Expert Group meetings on co-operatives. In 2013, he was a member of the Presidential Task Force on Parastatal reforms. Most recently he was Chairperson of the National Co-operative Policy Operationalization Task Force.

In the insurance industry Dr. Kuria was honoured with the Life Time Achievement Award in 2012. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Leadership by the Swiss Management Academy in 2017 and Fellow of the Institute of Directors (F.IoDK) in 2019 by the Institute of Directors in Kenya.

Currently, Dr. Kuria is Chairman of CIC Group, the Governing Council of Africa International University, Smep Microfinance Bank and Kenya National Entrepreneurs Savings Trust. Dr. Kuria is a regular speaker/trainer in both local and international conferences and seminars in insurance, co-operatives, leadership, governance and retirement planning.

Hlupekire Chalamba FCG, MBA, LLB (Hons)

Fellow Chartered Company Secretary- The Chartered Governance Institute, UK (formerly ICSA) Masters of Business Administration – ESAMI, Arusha Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Hons Degree – University of Malawi, Chancellor College. Mrs Chalamba is an energetic, self- motivated, innovative and qualified practicing lawyer with over 19 years of experience in corporate legal, company secretarial, litigation and general legal advisory services. She is currently working for Airtel Malawi plc as Legal & Regulatory Director/ Company Secretary. She previously worked as a Legal Practitioner at Racane Associates, a private law firm for 3 years. She is also a Notary Public.

Mrs. Chalamba is a Board Director of CIC-Africa Co-operatives Insurance Limited. She is also a Trustee of Ndimoyo Palliative Care Trust. Mrs. Chalamba participated in International Lawyers for Africa Program in London in 2012 representing Malawi Law Society. She was seconded to work for SJ Berwin one of the biggest multinational law firms in London (SJ Berwin merged with the Hong Kong-headquartered law firm King & Wood Mallesons on 1st November 2013). She gained a lot of international legal expertise as she was dealing with corporate customers.

Alinane Tembo

Alinane Tembo is Manager Organisational Readiness responsible for change management at Standard Bank Plc. She has more than 22 years’ experience in Human Resources Management. She joined Standard Bank Plc in September 2010 as Senior Business Partner People and Culture. Alinane previously worked
as Administration Manager for Admarc Mw Ltd from August 2007 to September 2010; before joining Admarc she was Administration and Human Resources Manager for Manica Mw Ltd from November 2004 to July 2007. Alinane started her career in November 2001 with the Reserve Bank of Malawi as Personnel Officer.

Alinane is currently serving as Board Director for Sparc Microgrants. She has served as Employee Panellist for the Industrial Relations Court from 2012 to 2015; also, as a member of the Strategy Sub Committee of ECAM from 2013 to 2015 and Councillor of MCCCI from January 2006 to December 2009.

Alinane has a Master of Science in Strategic Management from the University of Derby, she is also a Licenced Practitioner for Insights Discovery and a Certified Strategic Human Resources Professional by the International Institute for Executive Training. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Public Administration from the University of Malawi.

Ms. Gail Akinyi Odongo LLB(Hons), CPS(K)

Ms. Gail Odongo is a Member of the Board of Directors of CIC – Africa Co-operatives Insurance Limited and also sits in the Risk Management Committee.

She holds a Masters of Business Administration degree, Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB), Post Graduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law and is a member of the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya (“CPS(K)”).

She has vast experience in various capacities and industries ranging from Audit, Banking and Finance, Insurance and Legal. She is the Group Company Secretary and Chief Legal Services Officer of CIC Insurance Group Limited of Kenya.

Mr. Patrick Nyaga, is the Group Chief Executive Officer of CIC Insurance Group Ltd of Kenya. He holds a Master of Business Administration from Strathmore Business School and a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting. He is a Certified Public Accountant (K) and a member of ICPAK. Mr. Nyaga has over 30 years working experience mainly in financial services and auditing. He has worked in various senior positions in banking. Prior to joining CIC Group Ltd he was the Group Finance and Strategy Director- at Co-operative Bank of Kenya Limited. He previously worked at Barclays Bank now (ABSA) as the Regional Head of Assurance and at KPMG (EA), with the main focus being audit of financial institutions in Kenya and the region. He is a member of the Institute of Directors of Kenya and has undertaken training in various disciplines among them Corporate Governance courses, Insurance, Banking, and Strategy among others.

Mr. Michael Wambia

Mr. Michael Ondinya Wambia is a teacher by profession. He is currently the Director representing Western Region-based savings and credit societies (SACCOs)and is a board member of FARIDI SACCO and is also a member of the Institute of Directors of Kenya and a Delegate of Cooperative Bank of Kenya.

A Finance executive with over 22 years in Corporate Finance. Worked as Group CFO for Press Corporation, a widely diversified conglomerate, listed on the Malawi Stock Exchange. Has exceptional skills in financial management, company restructuring and turnaround strategies, deal negotiation and board oversight.

Mr. Michael Wambia

Christopher Kanyuka

Mr. Christopher Kanyuka is a member of the CIC General (Malawi) board and the Chairman of the Audit Committees of CIC (Malawi).

Mr. Kanyuka is the Founder and Managing Director of MobiMAX Limited, a start-up Digital Financial Services Company.

He is an ICT professional with over 42 years, experience in software development, security and communications.

Prior to founding MobiMAX, Mr. Kanyuka was a Senior Manager (ICT) for the National Insurance Company Ltd before being appointed the General Manager of NICO Technologies Limited.

As Head of ICT in the NICO Group, he was the principal actor in the setting up of ICT departments in Zambia, Uganda and Tanzania.

After retiring from the NICO Group, Mr. Kanyuka worked as CEO for MalCOM Limited, Interkad Limited and BroadMAX, all software development and marketing companies, and a founding director of ICT of Mbora Limited, a social enterprise company.

Mr. Kanyuka was the first Chairman of the Malawi Posts Corporation board and has also served on the boards of Chitakale Estates and Investments Alliance Limited.

Mr. Kanyuka is an Alumnus of the University of Malawi, Chancellor College and University of Cape Town Graduate Business School and is an Associate Member of the International Association for Computer Systems Security, and holds professional certifications in Software Design and Development, and IT Management.

Leroy Banda

Mr Leroy D Banda is currently the Head, Cooperatives Development and Projects in Malawi Union of Savings and Credit Cooperatives Limited (MUSCCO). He has a strong bias in business development, cooperatives development, capacity assessments, rural financial outreach approaches, proposal development and organization development. Leroy Banda holds a Bachelor of Education (Sciences) degree from University of Malawi and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Eastern and Southern Africa Management Institute (ESAMI). Banda has over the years received extensive training in SACCO development and management. Additionally, he has received training in Marketing, Business Plan Development, Human Rights, Policy and Advocacy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Managing a Training Function and Enterprise Development. He has undertaken consulting assignments both within the country and outside. His research and consulting interests are in financial services outreach methodologies, business research methods and community based self-learning methodologies.

Currently, Violet is obtaining her MA in International Human Resource Management at the Liverpool John Moore University.

Mr. Bardon Mbera is the Operations Manager for Co-operatives General Insurance Limited. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute (FCII) with 21 years’ experience in General Insurance both at Operations and Senior Management level.

His areas of expertise in insurance are in Underwriting and Claims management, strategic planning, market management, customer service, business analysis, product innovation and launch, mentoring, teamwork and team building. He has attended several training forums in insurance both local and international. He has worked with several reputable Insurance Companies at senior management level and brings that vast knowledge and expertise to Co-operatives General Insurance Limited.
